Saving Gopher Valley History

Things You May Not Have Known, or Maybe You Did!

Have you ever heard of Gopher Valley’s “flume,” its treacherous “plank road,” or “the Deer Creek Community Hall?”  The meteorite strike in Wiley Canyon? Or that two of the early settlers’ feisty French ancestors helped overthrow British kings?

If you have stories from the Valley, your history counts! Please share your memories—and photos!—of and from Gopher Valley.  No tidbit too small, no photo too scratched or faded!

Ervin Severns, decorated WWII pilot, back on the ground, hauling hay in Gopher Valley, 1948. He and family lived on the Stephen Hussey Place.

Gopher Valley was a diversified farming and logging community when I was growing up. Today, most farming is done on one large farm in the lower Valley; logging has mostly disappeared. Many residents now commute to work or work at home.

Where the Heck is Gopher Valley?

An hour southwest of Portland enroute to Lincoln City there’s a Dairy Queen about nine miles west of McMinnville. Turn right.

Gopher Valley’s well-researched and beautifully designed floats won first prize most years in the Phil Sheridan Days Parade. This 1959 float depicts Dr. John McLoughlin, considered the “Father of Oregon.”

My wife Heather and I are donating our time for this project. Our $ goal is only to cover publishing costs. Thank you to those who can chip in a few bucks!
